How many of you can not DEAL with another change in plans? I feel like I can’t possibly make one more decision right now. I don’t have enough information and I’m probably doing all of this wrong.

I know for me, I overthink like it’s my job. Today we’re talking to Anne Bogel who a lot of you know as Modern Mrs Darcy. Through her blog and podcasts, Anne helps us get more out of our reading life (which means we’ll get more out of our actual life) and now she has a new book that is EXCELLENT and timely. One of my favorite quotes from Don't Overthink It is "the best memories start with things going wrong". Well, I hope you’ve been buckled up because we have been “making memories” left and right!

This week Anne gives actionable steps and strategies to make easier, more confident decisions so that we can spend more time focusing on the things that really matter in life. You can find more from Anne on her podcasts What Should I Read Next? and One Great Book.

WHAT WE CHAT ABOUT:

  • how putting down our phones can help us stop overthinking

  • not letting our disappointments turn into comparisons that lead to shame

  • how Anne is helping guide her family through quarantine

  • Anne’s struggle with overthinking

  • the link between perfectionism and overthinking

  • determining when you’re giving something the attention it deserves vs. overthinking it

  • ways to stop overthinking

  • values-driven decision making

  • mental tricks to help you make decisions

  • stopping the overthinking spiral

  • adopting an attitude of experimentation

Waiting well through the adoption process, working towards financial freedom for your family and battling comparison as a parent of a child with delays are just a few of the topics we hit on today with my guest Alison Storm. She talks to us about her season of waiting and her distaste for the phrase “it happens in God’s time”. Alison saw child slavery first hand on a trip and it started a fire in her to change her parenting to battle entitlement. She founded an organization that can get your kids involved and feeling empowered too!

Alison Storm calls the south home and began her career as a television reporter working in newsrooms around the country. Alison was a part of HIS Morning Crew which airs on HIS Radio across the Carolinas and coastal Georgia, serves as the features editor of Belle magazine and facilitates Financial Peace University at her church. In 2018 she founded Crowdsourcing Kids, an organization that taps into the entrepreneurial spirits of young people to fund wells in India and support children rescued from slavery. Alison and her husband Tim have two little world changers, Sammy and Phani.

WHAT WE CHAT ABOUT:

  • Alison’s experience with Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University

  • being married to an Italian immigrant

  • why Alison chose to adopt and the long process of finding her daughter

  • how she has learned how to have grace for herself while raising a son with medical needs

  • what she learned in retrospect from the adoption process

  • Alison’s struggle with choosing her comfort over her children’s needs

  • how being debt-free allowed her to not to return to work after the adoption

  • how Alison’s work to provide clean water changed her life

  • how she’s helping kids in America spread hope in India

  • advice for listeners who may have something on their heart, but are afraid to begin the work

Have you ever wondered if you may have a substance dependence issue? Maybe you have a child or loved one dealing with substance abuse and could use some advice on how to love them well through that. My friend and neighbor Liz came to sit with me on my bedroom floor and tells us about her journey through alcohol use and rehabilitation. She shares when she came to faith and the conditions she made up to help keep her sober. We talk about pride, abortion, neglect, and denial in this bittersweet story.

Liz is a mom to three, a wife to a Richard and is in recovery. She believes that God can make a message out of all of her messes and she loves the idea of Struggling WELL vs. plain ole’ struggling. Gratitude is her superpower and I’m so glad to call her a friend!

WHAT WE CHAT ABOUT:

  • how Liz’s kids are teaching her to be present

  • taking our kids’ actions less personally

  • Liz’s journey with drugs, alcoholism, abortion, recovery, and relapse

  • setting healthy boundaries with loved ones dealing with addiction

  • the moment God met Liz in her darkest place and changed her heart

  • facing an addiction as a Christian

  • how God has helped Liz strive less and struggle well

  • recognizing when you have a problem

  • encouragement for listeners struggling with addiction
