“It’s impossible to connect with my teenager!” “My child is only 9, we aren’t battling teen issues yet.” “My relationship with the Father doesn’t REALLY impact my relationship with my kids.”

In the words of the great Dwight Schrute: FALSE! In this chat, Drew helps us understand how to approach hurdles with the teens we love.

Drew Hill is the author of Alongside: Loving Teenagers with the Gospel. He is also a pastor in Greensboro, NC and serves on the mission-wide leadership team for Young Life. Drew received his BA in Communications from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Master of Divinity from Denver Seminary. He is married to Natalie and they have three children: Honey, Hutch, and Macy Heart.

What we chat about:

  • Drew’s book Alongside: Loving Teenagers with the Gospel and his heart to connect teens and parents

  • what Drew learned through the book writing process

  • making sure our teens understand loving them is not contractual

  • extending grace and not projecting our fear of failure on our teens’ behavior

  • the myth that sharing with our mistakes with our teens will break their trust

Is your family weird/amazing/loud/embarrassing/picky? Or at least one of those things? Us too!

The Struggling Sisters talk about strange (and accidentally true crime) family traditions that Em found on the interwebs and we divulge the traditions we have started with our own families. We also did an extensive quiz to find out which Disney family we are. These are the facts: Katie’s family yells, Emily’s family can’t stand DiGiorno and hearing about serial killer families just plain makes us feel better about our own family situations.

What we chat about:

  • Katie’s Russian accent tips

  • unusual family traditions

  • Thomas family traditions including movie nights, Family Day and Emily making her daughter do math for Valentine’s Day

  • Katie’s Elf on the Shelf adventures

  • some things we’re starting, some we’re stopping and some things we’re going to keep doing

Do you frequent the parenting shame cycle? Could you use tips on how to genuinely engage with teenagers? How can you help your children choose quality friendships?

Kimberly Stuart grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, where she learned to be snobbish about corn on the cob and good storytelling. She earned degrees at St. Olaf College and the University of Iowa, both fine institutions that did very little to prepare her for the lethal cocktail of parenting and writing. Kim is the author of eight novels, including the Heidi Elliott series and her most recent book, Heart Land. She has a passion to write chemistry-driven, smart, romance that requires a reader neither to leave her brain at the door nor to visit a confessional after turning the last page. Kim has made her home in Minneapolis, Houston, Chicago, Costa Rica, Nebraska, and Iowa, where she now lives with her brave husband and three wily children.

What we chat about:

  • how to help your kids when they’re choosing friends

  • using empathy to help create a safe space for your kids

  • how to extend grace to yourself when you’ve said way too much

  • weird things we’ve done when we’ve met famous people

  • super niche documentaries

Do you ever feel inadequate because you don’t know enough? Do you tell yourself you’re too behind to ever catch up? In this episode with Katie, we discuss her recent decision to follow Jesus and the identity questions she still wrestles with. We do official internet “research” (via online quizzes) to drill down to our true identities as well. What we discovered is: the concept of identity is a hard one to wrangle and we all wonder if we’re on the right track from time to time.

What we chat about:

  • defining true identity

  • what it really means to “find our identity in Christ”

  • how to believe the truth in what God says about us instead of the lies we tell ourselves

I enjoy pop culture AND Christianity. Did you know this can be a thing?

Knox McCoy loves laughing and making people laugh. Really anything that’s laughter-adjacent, he’s into. He’s also super into the word “swashbuckling” and his dream is to one day use it in a bio. Knox began podcasting in 2011 as a way to talk more about popular culture, and to his extreme surprise, he’s still doing it every week on The Popcast with Knox and Jamie. As a resident of the South, Knox’s heritage is to enjoy football and barbecue, and he does so with great passion. He also enjoys zombie movies, police procedurals, and a good Netflix binge.

Knox lives with his wife and three kids in Birmingham, Alabama where he works as a screenwriter and as the swashbuckling co-founder of The Popcast Media Group. (Dreams really can come true.)

What we chat about:

  • learning from uncomfortable conversations

  • how pop culture informs Knox’s faith

  • teaching kids the gospel with care

  • questioning God

She's the author of Read for the Heart, Caught Up in a Story, and Journeys of Faithfulness, as well as her latest titled, Book Girl (a Woman's Guide to the Reading Life). She writes regularly about her adventures at sarahclarkson.com and is at slow work on a novel. She can often be found with a cup of good coffee in one of the many quaint corners amid Oxford's "dreaming spires," where she lives in a red-doored cottage with her husband, Thomas and their daughter, Lilian.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if life didn’t include loss? Sometimes we love things so much the idea of letting them go feels like it might be the end of us. If you are walking through a season of surrender (voluntary or forced) or if this season has been one of suffering for you, you’re going to find comfort in Shannan’s story. If you long for a community but don’t know how to get it, you are in for a treat with this episode as well! Shannan has a compelling story of how she has formed a ragtag group of family-turned-friends. I got so much out of this conversation and I know you will too!

What we chat about:

  • when struggles with infertility don’t result in the birth of a child

  • Shannan’s story of how God rescued her from the life she wanted

  • building community with people who are unlike you

  • why we should make being around people who make us uncomfortable a priority

  • maintaining hope when you see people in your community repeat harmful patterns

  • the power of simply showing up

Ellie Holcomb has created a beautiful, scripture rooted, children’s musical project Sing: Creation Songs. She wanted to write songs that were directly inspired by both God’s word and His beautiful creation that is a perfect companion piece to her upcoming children’s book Who Sang The First Song?. Each song is tied to specific Scripture but is also full of rich imagery from the world around us. She wanted kids to be able to sing these songs and see evidence of what they were singing all around them.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE to sing, so I got curious about who sang the first song. What did the world sound like as God created it? I loved these questions, so I set out to write a book so that we could explore not so much how God made the world, but why He created the world and each one of us. My sincere hope is that children (and the adults reading to them) would be reminded of who and whose we are, and that as we remember how God created us and loves us, our hearts and lives would sing for the joy of being loved!”

What we chat about:

  • Ellie’s humble beginnings in music

  • how letting go and being grateful changed the trajectory of Ellie’s life

  • avoiding comparisons tending the land that God has given you

  • setting boundaries to prevent over-extending yourself

  • the freedom that can only be found in truth

  • the inspiration behind Ellie’s new music and children’s book

Jessica Honegger is a pioneer. As founder and co-CEO of Noonday Collection, the world’s largest fair-trade jewelry company, she has created a new breed of social entrepreneurship that empowers women, connects cultures, and celebrates handmade beauty. Her path to award-winning business leader was anything but traditional: from serving as a midwife in Bolivia, to earning her Master’s degree in Education, to renovating and selling houses in Austin, Texas, Jessica has followed her heart down several paths, gaining once-in-a-lifetime experiences that all still guide her decisions today. A mom to three, she is also a passionate adoption advocate who initially launched Noonday Collection to help raise the needed funds to bring her and her husband’s third child home. Jessica shares her story, along with heartening encouragement, in her compelling new book, Imperfect Courage: Live a Life of Purpose by Leaving Comfort and Going Scared, available August 14, 2018.

What we chat about:

  • Jessica's calling and struggle to adopt her son from Rwanda

  • shifting your focus from what the world owes you to what you can offer to the world
